Every one of the country is responsible for present situation

Submitted by A.R.S. KUMAR

RTI is a good tool for good governance and accountability of government servants. The citizens of this country should understand the importance of Right to Information Act. However, some of the peoples are misusing the Act, but we should be very practical and we should work continuously by filing RTI applications; as our problems will not be solved without the use of RTI.
In my area where my residing there is problem of sanitary over flowing over the road causing health hazard for the last 6 years. I decided to fight with the government agencies andso, I met the Chairman of the board and sent several e-mails, written complaints to him. I spent monthly 6 to 7 visits to their office. I also met our area MLA and he promised to work in this direction. But there was no solution. After several meetings with the engineers I received a reply saying that problem will be solved soon as on 2006. In the mean time, several employees were transferred and our representations became pending. After much efforts, finally they made an estimate to do the work. But nothing happened.
When nothing happened till late 2007, then I filed several applications under RTI Act. After this, the situation changed drametically. Same officials, who were reluctant to find a solution to or sewage proble, started to find solution and the system was streamlined.
Hence in my opinion by filing RTI application, our problem can not only be solved, we can also monitor the work and do a follow up. But this needs a combined effort by all. Corruption can not be rooted out by just one person, every citizen is responsible to combat corruption. Everyone should understand this.

Hope for the best ,Thank you
